Every major unit in a petrochemical plant generates gas streams that carry unwanted droplets, mist, or particulates. Left untreated, these contaminants damage downstream equipment, reduce product quality, and shorten equipment life. This article walks through how filtration and separation equipment is applied across the main process units in petrochemical production.

Separation needs appear in almost every major unit across a refinery.
In fluid catalytic cracking (FCC), hot cracked gas carries large amounts of catalyst fines, which are recovered using cyclone separators. Hydrocracking and catalytic reforming units require efficient removal of liquid hydrocarbons and moisture from recycle hydrogen. In gasoline, jet fuel, diesel, waxy distillate, and residue hydroprocessing units, high-pressure separators are critical to product quality. Sulfur recovery units have strict requirements for acid mist removal from tail gas. Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) and membrane separation systems are highly sensitive to feed gas cleanliness.

In ethylene cracking plants, the quench system generates large volumes of gas-liquid mixtures, making high-efficiency demisters essential. Polyethylene and polypropylene plants require combined removal of dust and liquid droplets at reactor outlets and in off-gas treatment. In propane dehydrogenation (PDH), separating propane, propylene, and liquid-phase media is a key process challenge. Butadiene production requires high-efficiency demisters at multiple distillation column overhead positions.
In olefin derivatives, units producing ethylene oxide/ethylene glycol, acrylonitrile, butanol/octanol, EVA, POE, and nylon 66 each have their own gas-liquid separation requirements — all important application areas for filtration equipment.

In benzene/toluene/xylene production and aromatics extraction, gas-liquid separation equipment is widely used for solvent recovery and product purification. PTA (purified terephthalic acid) plants have very high demands on separation precision in oxidation reactor off-gas treatment.
In specialty chemicals, plants producing acrylic acid (AA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), polycarbonate (PC), polysilicon, and silicones all require high-performance gas-liquid or gas-solid separation systems to ensure product purity and long-term operation.
Steam-water separation in waste heat boilers and steam drums is essential for plant-wide steam quality. Flue gas desulfurization units must meet strict emission limits for liquid droplets and particulates. Screw compressor oil recovery systems need to efficiently capture oil mist from compressed gas to protect downstream equipment.
