The feed diffuser is a key internal component in catalytic reactors, designed to redirect and distribute incoming flow from the inlet nozzle uniformly into the reactor bed. In downflow reactors, the diffuser can be mounted on the flange of the inlet nozzle—which also serves as a manway for internals installation and catalyst loading—or fitted within an inter-flange groove.
Constructed from a combination of plate, screen, and perforated materials, the diffuser adapts to flow behavior and operational requirements in the reactor head. It often incorporates an impingement plate facing the feed stream, guiding flow through multiple channels. Sizing is determined based on inlet pipe diameter and nozzle elevation. For upflow configurations, the diffuser is installed above the nozzle. A removable design is frequently employed to facilitate inspection and cleaning.
